Weekend at Grandma’s…

Posted in Family at 11:01 pm by jettagirl

GrandmasBackyard

Weekend at Grandma's... always a pleasure. =)

This weekend I had invited my mom to go hiking with me, “V” and the SOC group in Gilroy and then head to my Grandma’s in Salinas for a visit.  When my mom didn’t call to confirm on Friday evening I figured she wanted to let the whole thing slide…then I got a call at 7:15am on Saturday morning.  ;)

Instead of doing the hike with “V” we decided to head straight down to my grandma’s.  I liked this idea a lot more because I could bring Sierra and spend more time with my grandma.   I haven’t seen my grandma since Easter so it’s been too long.

Since my grandma wasn’t expecting us until later she almost had a heart attack when I yelled “Surprise!!”  She was still busy cleaning and preparing freshly made spaghetti sauce from home grown tomatoes so my mom helped her in the kitchen and I headed out to the backyard to take some pictures and talk with my Uncle Tim.

Tomatoes

My grandma has the greenest thumb. Not literally green, although I haven't actually checked... hmm...

Volunteer

That whole sprawling plant is a tomato plant that started as a volunteer and just took over from there. Seriously, there must be something in the water. ;)

My Uncle Tim also has a green thumb and uses it to grow wicked hot peppers.  In addition to growing hot peppers my uncle has also written some amazing QBasic programs, has PI memorized to 1000 places (he’s recited off two full pages of numbers to me, no joke), and can probably out hike me even with me doing bodypump and backpacking trips.   But back to the peppers.  =)

HotPeppers

They look pretty harmless right? WRONG!! Merely touching ones finger to the cracked skin of these peppers and then touching your tongue results in several minutes of extreme burn.

YellowPeppers

My brother had grown these peppers from seed and gave the plants to my uncle. Looks like they're doing quite well. =)

My uncle takes great pride in the heat of his peppers so after having fun seeing my reaction to following his instructions to put my finger on the cracked skin of his hottest pepper and then touch my tongue he egged me to eat a good-sized piece of the pepper.  Was he insane?  Would I die if I actually ate a piece?  The answer to both questions is “No” so despite the fact that my mom was fearing for my well being and telling me not to do it I followed suite after watching my uncle pop a piece into his mouth.  For the next 5 minutes we kept pointing and laughing at each other as we coughed, eyes welling up with tears from the intensity of the burn.  Ah, good times, good times…  =)

After playing with fire in the form of hot peppers I decided on a less dangerous game.  I know I take after my mom in a lot of respects and also share many of my dad’s traits (not to mention his physical features…we both have piggy noses and grandma hands).  As I looked around my grandma’s sunroom however I realized that I also have a lot in common with my grandma and uncles as well.  First there was the dead things box and yeah, it’s just what it sounds like.  =)

BoneBoxes

Check it out, my grandma has a collection of bones and other dead things collected over 40 years ago when my uncles would bring them home from the creek as kids. Sweet!

HornedLizard

The box on top contains dried out snake skins, birds nest with abandoned eggs and this guy, a perfectly preserved horned lizard. I love it! =)

Skulls

The box on the bottom contains the skulls and jawbones of several different animals. I think it's very neat to be able to see the skeletal features of animals up close. It's all in the name of science. SCIENCE! =)

Then there was this awesome hand sculpted dinosaur (there are actually several) that my grandma has stomping around a prehistoric environment of succulents.  I’m not sure if my grandma made this or possibly one of her students when she taught elementary school for 30+ years.  Either way, it’s SO cool!  =)

Dinosaur

Raar!!! I'm a dinosaur with short little T-Rex arms. Fear me!! =)

I just thought it was cool to be able to see some of what I consider to be my weird little quirks and preferences kind of showcased in the form of these displays created by my grandma and uncles so many years ago.  =)

After an afternoon of chatting and hot pepper eating it was time for a delicious home cooked meal of spaghetti, salad with fresh home grown cherry tomatoes and bread.  I had been good and only ate an apple at lunch and didn’t snack on junk food before dinner so the meal was absolutely amazing.  Seriously, best dinner ever.  =)

After dinner my mom, grandma and I watched “The Glass Bottom Boat” with Doris Day (very funny) and then it was time to head to bed.  Sunday came and went all too quickly.  My grandma had to leave for church around 9 so my mom and I packed up the car and left around 8:30.  It was a wonderful trip and just like my grandma’s home-cooked meals, they always leave me looking forward to the next one.  Until then, the pictures below will have to hold me over.  =)

UncleTim

Uncle Tim harvests more of his peppers for pickling. He also makes a sweet pepper jam that my parents love on pancakes and toast.

HotPepperPlants

Until we meet again hottest of the hot pepper plants. You were a worthy adversary but ultimately you were bested by my stomach acid. ;)

Pansies

My grandma's back yard is like a secret garden to me because it backs up to trees that line the creek and contains some of the most beautiful flowers and landscaping I've ever seen. It always makes me feel at home.

Thanks for having us over Grandma.  I had a wonderful time and can’t wait until Thanksgiving.  Mmm, turkey, cole slaw, mashed potatoes and gravy…yeah, I can’t wait!  =)

Houston, we have a problem…

Posted in Jetta Stuff at 8:41 pm by jettagirl

This last weekend I went to pop the trunk of my Jetta and was saddened to find that nothing happened.  I could hear the latch apparatus doing something so at least the electronics part seemed to be working but yeah, no dice.  =(

Being that my Jetta is very important to me and I really like being able to use the trunk I decided that I would attempt to identify and fix the problem myself.  So tonight, armed with a backpacking headlamp, a screwdriver and a bowl to hold the screws, I shimmied through a folded down seat in the back row of the Jetta and into the trunk to begin removing the carpeted interior.

TrunkInterior

Although it was a bit cramped in there, it didn't take too long to remove the 13 screws and get a closer look at what was going on.

Latch

This is an up close of the broken latch assembly. When working properly the arm to the left of the white locking mechanism pushes the black lever to lift the latch and unlock the trunk.

BrokenLatch

Unfortunately the black lever is made of plastic (lame!) and finally cracked after 9 years of service. With the latch lever hanging on by a thread it was only a matter of time before it fell off completely. Boo... =(

Problem

After getting an up close and personal look at how the locking mechanism works it appears I should be able to unlock the trunk by turning the key clockwise (counter clockwise just engages the electronic lock). I'll have to replace some parts to give that a try.

I was hoping I could jury rig something to get the locking mechanism working again but it was not to be, well at least not without additional resources (like crazy glue perhaps).  I also tried to remove the metal mounting from the trunk so I could see about replacing the whole thing however I would have needed deeper sockets to get around the screws.  My brother has the right tools so I’m going to see if he can let me borrow them tomorrow to finish this up.

With no other options for fixing the trunk I guess it’s over and out from Jettagirl for now.  I’ll write more when I have an update on the status of my car.  =)

Lotus and Pig-Pig…

Posted in Random Stuff at 5:35 pm by jettagirl

A couple of weeks ago Heather stopped by the house and happened to have her camera on her.  The following events captured on film (well an SD card) show the evolution of Lotus and Pig-Pig’s dynamic from alpha pig and submissive dog to best buddies for life.  =)

LookAtMe

Don't look now Lotus but there is a pig on your shoulder. I think it wants your bone!

StalkerPig

He's getting closer. Watch out Lotus!!

StaringContest

Oh it's on now. Lotus, you know what you have to do.

Friends

Aw, that's right. Snuggle up with Pig-Pig. Lotus and Pig-Pig: Best friends for life. =)

Two days later Pig-Pig had been reduced to piles of stuffing strewn around the living room but it was nice while it lasted.  “Pig-Pig would have wanted it this way…” – (sort of Homer Simpson)  =)

A very “Sierra” Halloween…

Posted in Random Stuff at 4:24 pm by jettagirl

A couple weekends ago Sierra and I went over to my sisters to do crafts and watch Halloween movies (cute spooky Halloween movies, Sierra and I don’t like scary movies).  =)

Heather likes to get costumes for her doggies so in between “The Haunted Mansion” and “Clue” we played dress up with Sierra.  She wasn’t digging it to much but I thought she was a-dorable!  First she was a friendly moo cow.

SierraCow

Wait, is that a cow? No, it's Sierra! =)

SierraCow2

What a silly cow. Sierra, take that off. =)

Next Heffies dressed Sierra up as a good witch.

GoodWitch

Sierra was refusing to look at the camera. Hmm, maybe she was more of a "naughty puppy" witch.

SierraNMeJPG

Look, I have no makeup and greasy hair so we both look ridiculous so SMILE Sierra. No? Well you still look cute. =)

From Sierra and me, Happy Halloween Everyone!!  =)

Tilden/Sibley/Redwood Regional Parks Hike…

Posted in Hiking/Backpacking at 1:59 pm by jettagirl

Hurray for fall hikes! Thanks to Valerie and “V” I got to go on another great hike with the Society of Outdoor Cardinals where we traversed three really awesome regional parks including Tilden, Sibley and Redwood.

GroupPhoto

This is our crew (all 16 of us). This was a shuttle hike so we'd all have to fit into a car that seats 7 and a car that seats 5. I was one of the drivers so at least I had room. ;)

The plan was to start at the Steam Trains parking lot at Tilden Regional Park, shuttle some cars to our final destination (Redwood Regional Park) and then embark on our 18+ mile.  I’ve been on one hike with Valerie before and besides being an amazing hiker, she is also an incredible historian and enjoys sharing her knowledge with the rest of us.  Although it took more time because of all the stops it was awesome to learn more about the geology and history of the area.  Thanks Valerie.  =)

There were a lot of beautiful things to see along this trail.

Thistles

Beautiful fall thistles...

BeautifulFungus

My favorite picture of the day. I love the blue, oranges and browns. Same color as the scarf I bought at the Pumpkin Festival last year. =)

And some nature inspired signs of the season including a haunted house, well outhouse (I think it was haunted, I think I may have seen a ghost..ok, I didn’t but still).  =)

HauntedOuthouse

Ooo, it's a spooky old outhouse. With it being Halloween I think my imagination was a little more active than normal. =)

The hike was quite enjoyable and I was sad when we had to end it a bit early to accommodate Valerie’s social plans for the evening.  We made it about 14 miles in 7 hours and had a lot of fun.

MeHiking

Enjoying time beneath a canopy of rustling leaves and overarching branches.

After shuttling everyone back to their cars I started back down the road to CA-24.  Along the way I stopped briefly to capture the setting sun looking out over Grizzly Peak Blvd.  Really beautiful…

Sunset

The setting sun sparkles over the bay from a turnout on Grizzly Peak Blvd.

As always, thanks to “V” and Valerie, our trip leaders, for a fantastic hike.  I can’t wait until the next trip.  =)

Del Valle in the fall…

Posted in Hiking/Backpacking at 8:27 pm by jettagirl

DelValleFall

Lake Del Valle through the trees...

This last weekend Marshall was nice enough to take Sierra, Lotus and me to Del Valle for a nice little hike.  Fall has arrived in Del Valle and it’s absolutely beautiful.  I love it!  =)

Marshall isn’t exactly the hiker type (ok, he “greatly dislikes” hiking) but he still goes out with me because he knows how much I enjoy it.  To make the hikes more enjoyable for him he likes to listen to a TV show or book on tape on his iPhone (hence the FBI style ear piece he’s sporting with Lotus below).

MarshallNLotus

Big pimpin' pimpin'...

I had seen, and picked up (yep, picked up) two tarantulas on Saturday and was hoping to see a tarantula on our hike but no such luck.  Instead I found this, an unfortunate toad who appeared to have gotten squashed and then was drying in the sun.  A spooky sighting to prepare for Halloween which is this upcoming Saturday.

UnluckyFrog

Very unlucky frog. Normally I like seeing dead things (because I get to see these animals up close) but this one made me kind of sad. Sorry toady... =(

All in all we had a very nice hike.  I even got a picture of Marshall and me and he’s smiling!  =)

MarshallNJen

Smile for me Marshall, it's not so bad. =)

I’m off for an 18+ mile hike tomorrow at Tilden Park led by “V” and Valerie.  Should be a lot of fun and hopefully I’ll get some more great pictures of the beautiful outdoors in fall.  Goodnight…  =)

Somewhere over the rainbow…

Posted in Random Stuff at 8:40 pm by jettagirl

Ok, so I just made a reference to the Wizard of Oz.  Sue me.  ;)

Using my new camera and the PhotoStitch software I was able to capture this full rainbow right above my house.  Unfortunately I wasn’t familiar enough with how to take the pictures that I didn’t get as much of the house in the picture and you can still see a seam.  Still, not bad.  =)

Thank goodness I forgot my badge on the way to work otherwise I wouldn't have had the chance to take a picture of this amazing rainbow. =)

Thank goodness I forgot my badge on the way to work otherwise I probably would have passed up the opportunity to head back and take a picture of this amazing rainbow. Oh and that's my house underneath the rainbow BTW. =)

Robyn’s 13th Birthday…

Posted in Family at 8:23 pm by jettagirl

I can hardly believe it but my little cousin Robyn is turning 13.  Although Robyn’s birthday is actually Monday, my Aunt Tiffany and Uncle John hosted a family party on Saturday so we could all get together.

Next it was on to the pull up bars and swing set so Jeena and Tessa could show me their gymnast skills (and wait, is that Marshall?).

Hey, I like doing this too! =)

Ok, now Jeena and Tessa are actually holding real pull-ups. Guess who's standing on their feet. ;)

After dinner Marshall and Robyn happened to start talking about Pokemon to which Marshall said “Hey, do you want [insert good Pokemon character here]?”  Marshall plays Pokemon all the time for relaxation (hey no judging here, I watch crap shows on VH1 like Real Chance of Love and the like) so he didn’t mind parting with his best players.  With as much as he plays he’ll probably have those characters back in a couple days.  Plus it made Robyn really happy.  =)

For Robyn's birthday, Marshall gave Robyn a few of his prize Pokemon which Robyn seemed to really enjoy when they battled after dinner with her new team. =)

After dinner, presents and cake it was time for Marshall and I to head out to Tracy to check on Heather’s horses.  Heather and Jeriah went to Disneyland so we’re watching their 3 dogs and had to feed the horses once while they were gone.  When we got to the house we found a water geyser shooting out of her pool house.  The back pasture was flooded.  =(

When we attempted to flip on the barn lights nothing happened so Marshall had to use his game boy to light our way.  He immediately headed through the 6 inches of swampy horse crap and mud into the hissing pool house to see if he could figure out how to shut off the leak.  After about 5 minutes the barn lights flipped on and I freaked out thinking something had happened to Marshall and that he was arcing an electrical circuit causing the lights to flip on.  I yelled to him a couple of times and he finally came out saying he had been flipping switches inside the pool house thinking that might stop the flow of water through the broken pipe when one turned on the outside lights.  He realized at that point that he probably shouldn’t be in a flooded pool room with a live electrical panel there.  Good call.  ;)

We finally got the situation under control after calling my brother who reminded us that Heather is on well water so we just need to turn off the electrical circuit for the well pump and we’d be good.  Using the gameboy for light Marshall located the electrical panel on the side of Heather’s house and flipped the switch to the well.  The geyser stopped.  Hazzah!…  Great job Marshall.  Time to head back home and get to bed.  Goodnight!  =)

Yearly trek to the Pumpkin Festival (2009)…

Posted in Family at 7:03 pm by jettagirl

Welcome to the Pumpkin Festival (only a few more miles taking about 2 hours of driving). ;)

Welcome to the Pumpkin Festival (only a few more miles and about 2 hours of driving). ;)

Hurray so it’s October which means the Hollfelder’s yearly trek to Half Moon Bay for the Pumpkin Festival.  Yep, every third weekend in October since I was a little kid my parents would load up the kids and make the long trip to the coast.  If we left super early in the morning we could make it in about 45 minutes.  Unfortunately as we grew up and no longer participated in the children’s parade and costume contest we began leaving later which meant anywhere between an hour to two hour drive to get to the festival.  This year I think we achieved a personal best with 2.5 hours for 35 miles (average of 14mph).  Craziness.

I happily played chauffeur for the day and Meems took over taking pictures on our 2.5 hour trip to Half Moon Bay.

After getting into a slightly heated discussion with my mom about letting people live their lives and “to each his own” I encouraged my mom to check out my camera.  Within minutes she was completely absorbed with taking pictures of everything and everyone within range (Ooo, shiney!.. she’s just like me).  ;)

I asked her to take a picture of the place where 5-6 years ago my dad had to pull over so I could, um, “use the restroom” when I couldn’t hold it any longer (note, the portable toilet was not there when this happened several years ago).  =(

I wonder if I was in the inspiration for putting a portable toilet at this turnout. Man that would have come in handy several years ago. ;)

I also asked her to take a picture of the pampas grass because I thought it looked cool against the blue sky (she stuck both arms out the side window to get this shot).

I love this shot. All askew and yet it looks natural to me. Nice picture Meems. =)

Of course there were tons of pictures of the family which got old after awhile apparently.

Grumpy at sitting in traffic and my mom taking so many pictures, my dad strikes a mean muggin' face.

Since everyone was avoiding the camera my mom had to get sneaky and started doing point-and-shoot shots under her arm.  This one actually came out pretty good.  It had me laughing hysterically.  =)

Ha! Gotcha! =)

Ha! Gotcha! =)

And who do we have to thank for all these great pictures?  Why it’s none other than the famous photographer Meemers!!  =)

Great pictures Meemers. And nice workout shirts. ;)

Since traffic was so backed up I took the camera and shot a couple pictures including this super sweet one of a metal thestril.  And now on to the festival.  =)

Cool metal thestril welcomes festival goers. Awesome. =)

Cool metal thestril welcomes festival goers. Awesome. =)

The arts and crafts at the festival were really great this year.  I found an amazing felted hat that I fell in love with and bought, and Marshall found a very cute sculpture of a Doberman that we convinced him to purchase.  My dad started a tradition that I fight at first but ultimately acquiesce to which is that he gives each one of the kids $100 to purchase something special for ourselves.  Very generous and so thoughtful.  Thanks Dad.  =)

I normally greatly dislike hats but something about this one called out to me. After walking the entire festival I finally decided I wanted to get the hat with the money my dad had given me. Thanks Dad. I love the hat. =)

We also saw Farmer Mike who carves amazing (although kinda scary) pumpkins each year.

Farmer Mike has been carving pumpkins for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until 3 years ago that we finally started noticing a few grey hairs. Seriously, that guy doesn't age! It must be the unicorn blood. ;)

Finally it was time to head back to the car so we could make a 5pm dinner reservation for the Moss Beach Distillery.  Heather had suggested we go to the Distillery after the Pumpkin Festival last year and we enjoyed ourselves so much we have added that to the tradition.  Hurray for another great time at the Pumpkin Festival.  =)

Marshall and Me overlooking the ocean after arriving at the Moss Beach Distillery.

Dinner at the Distillery was amazing as always.  We started out with delicious steamed mussels and went through 3 baskets of bread sopping up the best part of the dish, the buttery, well seasoned juices.  Heather and I had the same thing we had last year, a succulent seafood medley over linguine and Marshall ordered filet mignon with cheesy potatoes that he enjoyed much more than the dish he had last year (thank goodness).  =)

After dinner we feeling good so we took the opportunity to take some family photos.  First up, Mom and Dad.

They may fight like cats and dogs at times but they still love each other. =)

Next, Heffies and me.

What, what!? =)

What, what!? =)

After Marshall took this picture my mom said “Marshall, take a picture length-wise” to which I jokingly added “Yeah, do it right Marshall.”  Marshall responded by then starting to randomly snap pictures and talk with a “Bruno-esque” accent saying “Oh, I don’t even know what I’m doing.  I’m an arteest.  It’s crazy.  It’s madness. “  I endulged in playing Marshall’s “model” and couldn’t stop laughing which led to this series of pictures.  Gotta love it…  =)

Work it!

Work it!

Oh I'm being so playful!

Ok I can't take this anymore. My sides are splitting and so are Heather's. =)

Jettagirl vs. “The Yard” (2009)…

Posted in Random Stuff at 7:34 am by jettagirl

So about this time of year when my joints become increasingly creaky with the threat of rain in the distance (yep, I’m so old my joints can foretell storms), I feel a tinge of guilt for neglecting my yard knowing that soon it will be too late to do anything once the rain turns it into a swampy mess.  So in the wee hours of a what would have been a lazy Sunday I lay in bed making a plan of attack and psyching myself up for the intense physical effort this would take.

First on my list was the front yard.  I knew I wanted to trim back the shrubs, cut down unruly branches from the birch that has taken over a corner of the yard, mow the lawn and generally tidy things up so it looked nice.  As I was working on trimming back the shrubs I realized I should also cut back the oleander that separates my driveway from my neighbors.  We have to back the Freestyle in so you can get out since they take up so much room and I’m constantly driving the car into the scratchy branches (eh, it’s not like it’s the Jetta or anything).  ;)

Here’s what it looked like before.

I mean it's not so bad to look at, it just seems to cause more problems than it's worth.

I mean it's not so bad to look at, it just seems to cause more problems than it's worth.

As I was working to trim back and thin the oleanders, my neighbor Rob opened his garage door which happened to be right after I had over thinned a section of the hedge nearest the garages.  I said hi and then leadingly asked, “Hey, so what do you think of these oleanders?..” Rob said, “I don’t really like them.”  To which I responded, “Me neither!  I hate them!!  Can I cut them down?”  =)

I barely waited for Rob to say “Yeah!” and 30 minutes later I had cut down every branch.  Ah, that felt good…  =)

Totally demolished with one pair of extra heavy duty bypass loppers. Ah, so satisfying... =)

The easy part was cutting this down. Now we had to haul it to Rob's backyard. 5 truckloads!

After clearing out the oleander branches (Rob was nice enough to let us put the clippings in his side yard until we could figure out how to dump them properly) I went back to the shrubs, tree and moving of the lawn.  Here’s what that looked like before.

What a mess. The large shrub always scratched my arm going to the backyard and the tree branches nearly broke our fence. I need to whip (wHip) this yard into shape. =)

And after.

Now that's better. Behave, behave! =)

I also cleaned up the area between the garage and front door so I could finally setup the waterwheel my dad had made for me last Christmas.  It looks amazing!

After nearly a year I finally setup the waterwheel my dad had lovingly made and given me for Christmas last year. It looks awesome and I received so many compliments from my neighbors. Thank you Dad. =)

At this point the front yard was pretty much done.  It was about 2pm in the afternoon and I had been working since 9 in the morning.  I knew I needed to at least get the weeds whacked down and the lawn mowed in the backyard before I could truly call it a day.  I asked Marshall to move the equipment back there (I was running on fumes so I needed all the help I could get) and in an hour got the backyard done.  Hurray…  so tired, so sleepy, so sore…  ;)

For the rest of the evening I chilled out and rested my tired muscles.  I think I fell asleep at 7:30 that night.  Seriously, that was a lot of work.  It was well worth it though as my yard looks really nice now and I can safely enter the rainy season without worrying about a tree branch taking out my fence or the backyard turning into a grass swamp mess.  Until next year!… =)

Oh yeah, and a bonus photo for ya, I also knocked down these wasp/yellowjacket nests from the front porch eaves. “You won’t hurt anyone, ever again!” ;)

Bees!!! Yeah, I knocked these nests down too.

Bees!!! Yeah, I knocked these nests down too.
